Processing Alpaca Fiber into Roving
At Moe Acres, LLC Fiber Mill and Farm, we specialize in transforming raw alpaca fiber into beautifully crafted roving, perfect for spinning and other fiber arts. Our meticulous processing methods ensure that every batch maintains the softness and quality alpaca fiber is known for. Below is a step-by-step breakdown of our fiber processing journey:
Step 1: Skirting and Sorting
We begin by hand-skirting the fiber to remove dirt, vegetation, and coarse guard hairs. This essential step ensures that only the finest fiber moves forward in the process. Fibers are also sorted by grade, color, and texture to meet customer specifications.
Step 2: Washing
The fiber is gently washed using biodegradable, fiber-safe detergents. Multiple washes and rinses ensure the removal of dirt and natural oils without damaging the delicate structure of the alpaca fibers.
Step 3: Drying
After washing, the fiber is carefully laid out to dry in a controlled environment. Proper drying is essential to maintain the integrity of the fiber and prepare it for further processing.
Step 4: Picking
Next, the fiber is "picked" to open up clumps and align the fibers loosely. This step also helps remove any remaining debris, creating a fluffy and airy fiber that’s ready for carding.
Step 5: Carding
The carding process aligns and smooths the fibers into a continuous web. This is a critical stage where the fibers are blended evenly, resulting in a cohesive, soft roving with excellent loft and hand feel.
Step 6: Roving Production
Finally, the carded fiber is drawn into roving—a long, soft, and consistent strand of fiber that’s ideal for spinning. Our roving is crafted to ensure a smooth spinning experience, with minimal breakage and consistent texture.
Quality Assurance
Every batch of roving undergoes a final quality check to ensure it meets our high standards for softness, cleanliness, and consistency.

Expert Craftsmanship: Our hands-on approach and attention to detail result in superior roving.
